On Sunday, Christina and I spoke at Piedmont Church in Marietta. We had a great time with our friend, Dr. Ike Reighard. We were there speaking on “Developing A Lifestyle Of Leadership” and we also shared our new short film, One Night Only. Christina shared the story of her battle with Breast Cancer and was able to connect with some others who are in that battle now. It was a spectacular day.

It is amazing to see how the One Night Only film is able to connect with a wide variety of people in such an emotional and powerful way. If you are in the Atlanta area, be sure to join us on Wednesday evening at The Village Church in Hapeville.

Above is a photo of Carisa and I with Ike after the presentation on Sunday.

Hapeville, GA event - Donny Henderson

Posted in Donny Henderson, Events, Inspiration, Leadership by The Leadership Movement

For those of you in the Atlanta area, I just wanted to let you know that Christina and I will be in the Hapeville, doing a presentation called “Developing A Lifestyle Of Leadership” on Wednesday evening, January 7, at 7pm. This will be one of the few times that we are going to be speaking really close to home and we would love for you to be there. As a part of our presentation, we will be showing our brand new short film called One Night Only. Many of you have seen the trailer already and have been asking about the film. This will be one of the first public viewings of the film, so this would be a great night to see it.

We will be speaking at The Village Church, just down the street from the original Chick-Fil-A restaurant. The room is beautiful and only seats a little over a hundred people, so we are expecting a really special, intimate gathering.

As you probably know by now, our “thing” is leadership, but our presentation will be much more than just a “motivational talk” from a business perspective. It will be a night of inspiration and joy. Don’t get me wrong, the principles that we discuss will have a profound impact on any organization or individual, but this night means so much more than that. If you know of anyone who could use a little inspiration right now, please make sure you get them there that night. I guarantee that you will leave feeling encouraged, motivated, and inspired.

Please make plans to join us at The Village Church on Wednesday evening, January 7, at 7pm.

I have also heard a rumor that the evening is going to be captured on video, so look sharp, you might end up on camera!
Thanks and we’ll see you there.

I am increasingly amazed at how many so-called “experts” there are who speak (and sometimes preach) about image, marketing, appearance, etc… while they themselves have poor websites, lousy marketing collateral, and amateur photography. I would have a hard time trusting my personal or professional development to a company or an individual who didn’t present a credible image. Don’t get me wrong, many of these experts offer a great product, sound advice, and legitimate services, but without the image to back it up, I can’t imagine the kind of success they might achieve if they just took some of their own advice.

Experts tell us that when we meet someone our subconscious immediately begins making judgements about what we are seeing and hearing. They tell us that within 4 seconds our subconscious has judged that person as a “winner” or a “loser”. This is why advertisers surround their products with beautiful women (and men). It is why people in commercials are so happy. Advertisers want our subconscious minds to think of them (and their product) as a winner. It is the reason that imaging experts have said that, “Nothing succeeds like the appearance of success.” Image counts.

Over the next few weeks I will pop in with some fairly random input on imaging, marketing, and other related topics, along with some tips that will help sharpen and polish your personal and professional image, and help you make the right kind of impression in those crucial first 4 seconds.

For today let’s start at the beginning. Let’s assume that you already have a name for your company or organization. One of the first things you need to do is create a logo.

Here are some simple tips that will help you in creating your corporate identity.

Your logo doesn’t need to describe or even hint at every aspect or service offered by your organization. This is actually a fairly big one. Your logo needs to be like a welcome mat, or a friendly doorman at the entrance to your organization. It doesn’t need to provide a full description of what will be discovered inside, just the basics. An effective logo should offer a quick “hello” and give people a general good feeling about your business. It should be an attractive gateway to what awaits.

Your logo should simply express a little about “who you are” as a company. If you operate a daycare center for children you wouldn’t want a black and white logo with hard lines. You might choose something bright and maybe include a simple cartoon or character that would appeal to children. Likewise, a news organization shouldn’t choose a “fun” logo. Choose something that hints at the nature of your business or personality without being too obvious.

Several years ago, I saw a church logo that included (in addition to the name of the church) a cross, a dove, a silhouette of a family holding hands, the globe, and bloody nails (which I assume were meant to represent the crucifixion of Christ, but actually seemed a bit morbid next to the family holding hands). This would be an example of a BAD LOGO!! Remember, in most cases, less is more.

Let me know if this information was helpful.

Great leaders - Christina Parker

Posted in Christina Parker, Leadership by The Leadership Movement

In our time of fierce competition, it is important that we are laser focused on the strategies that will make a significant and long term impact on our business.  Along with the measurable financial strategies it is important to ensure that you stay focused on your leadership strategy. The development of leadership skills of yourself and the team around you is imperative if you want your business to grow. Remember, a business cannot grow without until it grows from within.  How do you know that you are a leader?  What makes a great leader? There are many qualities and characteristics of great leaders and certain ones are found in every leader. I have listed a few here for you to think about.

1. Great leaders have made the decision to be great leaders. They are determined and committed to be great leaders. They have declared themselves as leaders and written down “I am a great leader.” Even when the going gets tough they are still great leaders and they do not falter.

2. Great leaders help others become great leaders. They come from a position of service and they are always thinking about how they can help the other person to become a great leader as well. They offer everyone with whom they come in contact the chance to join them in becoming a great leader.

3. Great leaders learn from other great leaders. They are constantly reading books by other great leaders, as well as listening to them and reading about them. They know who the great leaders in their profession are and they stay current with what they are doing and with the knowledge that they are creating.

4. Great leaders are willing to take risks. They understand that only by taking risks will they reach new heights. Taking risks enables them to understand what other leaders experience and to help their developing leaders become comfortable taking risks as well.

5. Great leaders step outside of their comfort zone on a regular basis. They know that only by stretching themselves will they become even greater leaders. Minor leaders or non-leaders stay inside their comfort zone and are too scared to try new things. They rationalize and make excuses as to why they cannot achieve their goals.

6. Great leaders set goals. They make their goals specific, measurable and reasonable. They write down their goals and they set deadlines as to when they will be achieved. They focus on their goals with gazelle intensity and they persist at achieving them even when the going is tough.

7. Great leaders are committed for the long haul. They understand that they will not attain the level of great leadership overnight. They are constantly seeking improvement in their leadership and they are humble and willing to change. They make adjustments in their leadership when necessary. They are committed to constant and never ending improvement. They realize that there is not only one path to leadership and they are willing to experiment and put forth the time and effort necessary to find the path to leadership that will work best for them.

My wish for you is that you will not be content with the status quo. That you will always be searching for new ways to balance your life and business and that you will continue to exercise and grow your leadership “muscle” so that you can accomplish the goals and visions that have brought you to today.

The BAM effect - Christina Parker

It amazes me that one human can walk by another human without engaging with them in one way or another. It does not necessarily have to be words. It can be a smile, a sparkle of eye contact or body language. It can be a nod of the head, a raise of an eyebrow or a flirty pout of the lips. Have people gone so far as to “process” their days instead of experiencing them? Do they not realize that all days are precious and that everyone that walks by their path has something to offer, even if it is just a curious eyebrow raise?

Donny and I spoke at a conference a couple of weeks ago with about 5,000 people. I love the larger conferences. They have a buzz of energy that is contagious. I love to sit in on the conference before it is time for us to step on the stage and turn the magic on. My favorite thing to do is to sit and watch people and how they interact, or on many occasions don’t interact. During conferences, people with similar interests are drawn together. You would think that there would be many more conversations and connections occurring. Sure there is networking, but this is very different than engaging in a two way conversation in an effort to find out more about the other person on a personal level: Talking about things that are important to the other person with no expectation of gain for you.

Relationships are built and shattered in conversations. Our lives succeed or fail one conversation at a time. Some of you may be thinking…..that is a bold statement. Think about it. How many of us have left a conversation excited and kicking our heals feeling like we “nailed it” because the outcome was so great? How many of us have had to expend a lot of energy cleaning up the aftermath of a conversation that was misinterpreted or failed? How many of us have been able to engage in an incredible experience because we took a risk and entered into casual conversation with each other and “BAM” a connection occurred unexpectedly? Our lives are built, one conversation at a time.

I was fortunate enough to experience the “BAM” effect…..hey, that sounds like a good book title, doesn’t it? About a year ago I was flying home from a conference and happen to sit next to a gentleman named Cam Shillington. I did not know Cam before I boarded the plane. I was exhausted from talking to thousands of people and frankly had no intention of engaging in conversation with him either. My plan was to put on my iPod, lean my head on the window and go to sleep until I reached the ground in Atlanta. That is not at all what happened and I am thankful for it. I did engage in casual conversation with Cam and then “BAM” the connection happened.

Cam happened to work with Steve Wingfield. Steve is a world-wide known speaker, author, leader and evangelist. (He is also one of the most humble leaders you will ever meet.) Cam and I talked during the flight, exchanged contact information at the end of the flight and went our separate ways. I never expected to hear from him again. A couple of months later, he called me and said that he was in the area and wanted to meet for lunch. I gladly agreed and it just so happened that Steve was with him. The “BAM” effect happened again and Steve and I connected. Through that connection, I was invited to be the keynote speaker at the 46th Annual Leadership Prayer breakfast. I was also the FIRST female leader to ever address the very influential group. That is not the coolest “BAM” either……even though it is pretty cool!

The biggest “BAM” of all was the impact that occurred on the large audience that was in attendance that day. Some very powerful and experienced business leaders came to me and said that I helped them realize that they were managers instead of leaders. Some women leaders thanked me and told me that I gave them great inspiration. The best “BAM” of all is that a married couple that had given up believing that there was a God that loved them and cared for them, changed their perspective on this.

Leadership, and life for that matter, is best spent investing and developing other people. All of our actions, be they brief or long in duration, help to shape and mold the person across from us. If I had not made a choice to engage in conversation with Cam, that impact would not have been made for them. I was being interviewed at the end of the speech and one of the media representatives asked me what I wanted my legacy to look like. My comment to him, “They do not have to remember my name or my face. I would like them to remember my spirit because that is what will live on in others and help to create a movement.” Our lives succeed or fail one conversation at a time. Take the time to create and find your own “BAM” moments. You never know what may happen.
